The heartwarming moment a new pet is adopted is a firm favorite in the internet world—but a video of a pet adopting their new human has gained the attention of the internet, sparking joy with TikTok users.
Shared in January on TikTok by user Eric Liu—who posts under the handle onetrueeric—the video has over 52 million views and has amassed thousands of delighted comments.
The caption read: “My gf just adopted this dog but I think the dog adopted her.” In the video, the German Shepherd comes running in and straight to the woman before putting her paws on her lap and cuddling towards her.
The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals estimates that around 2 million dogs are adopted each year in the US, with 23 percent of all owners saying that they got their canine companion from an animal shelter or humane society.
One TikToker wrote: “Why am I crying?? This is amazing. Match made in heaven.” Another said: “What a pawfect match.”
In a follow-up video, Liu shared the moment the new dog, named Dahlia, came home to live with the couple and their other German Shepherd dog Zeus.
According to the American Kennel Club, the German Shepherd is the second most popular dog in the US, known for being loyal, confident, and highly intelligent.
“The dog chose her,” said one TikTok user. Another wrote: “She’s so gorgeous! German Shepards are the best.”
In the later video, many viewers praised the couple for adopting and taking such good care of their canine friends. One user wrote: “You guys are amazing and deserve all the luck in the world for adopting. I can’t thank you guys enough.”
In a later video, Liu spoke to the camera after the viral response to his original post. He said: “I honestly didn’t think this video was going to get some many views. Go out, adopt a dog and just have the best life.”
Giving some more information about Dahlia, he told her new fans: “She’s doing great. She is about one and a half years old. She knows a couple of commands and tricks. She’s a sweetie.”
“German Shepherds are the best, and she definitely picked your girlfriend as her person,” said one commenter.
